There is a piece of career advice I believe more estheticians need to hear:

Your education matters, but so do the rooms you choose to enter.

We spend a lot of time in this industry thinking about what we need to learn next.

Another certification.

Another modality.

Another device.

Another product line.

And continuing your education is incredibly important. But some of the biggest opportunities in your career may not come from another certificate.

They may come from a conversation.

Your Career Can Be Bigger Than One Path

When I became an esthetician, I could have never predicted every direction this industry would take me.

My career has allowed me to work in the treatment room, own a spa, edit a professional esthetics magazine, host a podcast, speak, educate, attend conferences, interview some of the industry’s most recognizable names, and create experiences for other estheticians.

None of it happened because I followed a perfectly mapped-out career plan.

Much of it happened because I stayed curious, followed the opportunities that felt aligned, shared my ideas, and continued putting myself in rooms where I could learn from and connect with other people.

That is why I believe so strongly that there is no single definition of what an esthetician’s career has to look like.

The treatment room can be your entire career.

Or it can be the beginning of it.

Sometimes You Need to See What’s Possible

It’s difficult to imagine a career you have never seen modeled for you.

That’s one reason industry events are so powerful.

You suddenly find yourself surrounded by thousands of people who have taken the same foundational education and created completely different careers with it.

You meet the solo esthetician building an incredible local clientele.

The educator traveling around the country teaching her technique.

The founder developing a skincare line.

The spa owner building a team.

The content creator partnering with brands.

The industry executive shaping what comes next.

And something begins to shift.

You start thinking:

Maybe there is more available to me than I realized.

Get in the Room

Networking sometimes gets reduced to exchanging business cards or trying to meet someone who can “help” your career.

I think about it differently.

Networking is relationship building.

It’s being curious about other people’s work.

It’s telling someone what you’re creating.

It’s asking thoughtful questions.

It’s supporting other people.

It’s allowing yourself to be seen.

And sometimes, years later, those relationships turn into opportunities neither person could have predicted when they first met.
